Dwayne Oldham is originally from Lander and his grandfather ranched in the area. Dwyane went to Casper College and then on to the University of Wyoming to complete his bachelors degree. He then earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Kansas State University. After receiving his DVM, Dwayne started a veterinary clinic on the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. He and his wife Denise operated a veterinary clinic and worked with her family’s ranching operations until Dwayne accepted a position as the Wyoming State Veterinarian. While Dwayne worked as the State Vet, he and Denise started building the Double D Ranch. As they built the ranch all of their children began working with them as well. They were all involved in 4H and FFA and also began by helping out around the ranch, eventually getting loans to purchase cattle from Dwayne and Denise. They are now all partners in the ranch as well as having off-ranch careers.

Double D Ranch is a cow/calf operation with over 500 head of Angus-cross pairs that graze the lush pastures at the base of the Wind River Mountains.

Denise and Dwayne's oldest son, Jared completed a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Kansas State University and earned his doctorate of veterinary medicine from Washington State University. His is now a practicing veterinarian along with his duties at the ranch. Daughter Aisha lives with her husband in Avon, CO and helps out at the ranch during busy times. Their second daughter, Odessa earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture communications from the University of Wyoming. Odessa is currently the food sourcing manager for the Food Bank of Wyoming and is also a fifth-generation Navajo jewelry artist and silversmith. Her business, Indigenous Sister Jewelry features authentic, hand-made Navajo jewelry. In her spare time, Odessa is involved with the Wokini Bison Project. This is a native women-led initiative under the Buffalo Youth Nation Project (BYNP) that works to restore the sacred relationship between Indigenous youth, the land, and the buffalo. The project operates on the Wind River Indian Reservation with the overarching goal of promoting cultural, food, and environmental sovereignty. Youngest son, Jess completed his bachelor’s in microbiology at the University of Wyoming and is currently working on his MBA at Arizona State University. In addition to his studies he also works as a model and actor when he is not on the ranch.

In 2016 the Oldham family took on a new project, the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary. In partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary is one of only four public, off-range pastures in the United States and is only one that located on an Indian Reservation. The Oldhams provide professional care for over 250 free-roaming un-adoptable wild mustangs. They have an educational interpretive visitors center that includes curated panels and displays in addition to a small gift shop. They offer guided tours by appointment during their open summer hours. In addition to the un-adoptable mustangs that are on the ranch permanently, the Oldhams also offer started and trained mustangs for adoption through the BLM.

In 2016 the Oldham family opened the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary. Wind River is one of only four sanctuaries that is open to the public, and the only one located on an Indian Reservation.

Double D Ranch has two full-time employees and offers summer internships for interns that want to learn about wild horses and working on a ranch. Katie Eggebraten started as an intern at the Double D Ranch and is now the Sanctuary Manager and Adoption Coordinator. This past summer the Oldhams had two young ladies as interns, one from Pennsylvania and the other from France. Double D's Ranch Hand and Caretaker is local cowboy, Austin Alley. Austin has worked on ranches throughout the northern Rocky Mountains and has been with the Oldhams for over a decade.
